Tricks to Extend the Lifespan of Your Windows

Buying new windows for your home is a major purchase. Luckily though, it isn't something that needs to be done often. However, few people realize that there are a few tips and tricks that can help you extend the lifespan of your new windows. My husband and I recently bought new windows and I wanted to make sure I got the most out of them, which is how I came across these tricks. I spent a lot of time researching and learning about them, so I decided to create a website to help others who may be looking for the same information. I hope this helps you.

4 Expert Tips For Window Washing

by Bradley Castillo

If you have ever had your windows professionally cleaned, you know the difference between an expert washing them, and doing them on your own with spray and paper towels. While that method works, you can actually get the flawless shine of professionals with just a few simple tricks. Here are some expert tips for washing windows.

Use the Right Tools

The first thing you need to do is get some professional-level tools for washing windows. If you get no other tool, make sure you get a squeegee. This is used instead of paper towels or microfiber tools. The squeegee allows you to remove water from the windows successfully without leaving streaks behind. You should already know how to use them, as they are used on your car windows at the gas station.

Another tool to consider is a scraper. This can remove debris that might be stuck to the window. However, it can also scratch your windows, so be very careful when using it. If you have high windows in your home, get what is called a mop cleaner. This is a long stick with a soft pad on the end that allows you to wash the windows without using a ladder.

Try Different Soaps

When it comes to the type of soap you use for washing the windows, it might take a little trial and error. Everyone has their favorite, from regular mild dish soap, to fancy organic sprays. If you can't find any store-bought varieties that you like to use, consider using a natural product like vinegar. Vinegar is excellent at cleaning many areas of your home, is all-natural, and provides a long-lasting deodorizing scent as well. Dilute the vinegar either in a bucket of water, or in a spray bottle.

Use Cold Water

Instead of getting a window cleaner spray, consider using diluted soap in a bucket with cold water. When filling the bucket, make sure the water is cold, not lukewarm or hot. The hotter the water it is, the faster it will evaporate on the windows. This is what leaves behind water spots when you are attempting to wash the windows. Fill a bucket with cold water and a few drops of your preferred detergent. This should be enough to get perfectly clean windows.

Be Careful of the Window Frame

No matter what you do and what tools you use, some water will get caught between the glass and the frame. This is when you need to wipe down that water with a microfiber cloth. This type of cloth is ideal because it doesn't leave behind lint or particles on the windows. Make sure you don't leave the little bits of water in the frame because it eventually causes damage to the wood or will make its way over to the glass to cause spots and streaks.
